From the discussion "society" and "communication", using the pragmatic-systemic theory of Leonel Severo Rocha, the present work was divided into three chapters that will be presented in the next lines. However, the mass media mobilized public opinion with sensationalist information, having placed homosexuals as "scapegoats" of the epidemic. This link between homosexuality and AIDS was worked alongside Antonin Artaud's text entitled "The theater and its double", in which a dialogue was made between the "gay plague" and the history of the ship Grand-Saint-Antoine.

The work concludes by observing the influence of protest movements in the modification of public opinion regarding the AIDS epidemic, with the advance of science and the gradual disintegration of the idea that the HIV virus only contaminated homosexuals.
